MMG is a mid-tier global resources company which explores, develops and mines base-metal deposits around the world. Headquartered in Melbourne and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (Stock Code: 1208), the company is one of the world’s largest producers of zinc and also produces significant amounts of copper, lead, gold and silver. MMG benefits from an experienced international management team and the support of its majority shareholder China Minmetals Corporation. MMG currently owns and operates the Century, Golden Grove and Rosebery mines in Australia, the Kinsevere mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the LXML Sepon mine in Laos.


Productivity improvement is a key priority for MMG. The introduction and implementation of new technology systems are a component of improving productivity, as well as enhancing business infrastructure for continued well-managed growth. Like most mining companies, MMG operates regional and remote work sites with a fly-in fly-out (FIFO) workforce as well as its corporate office in Melbourne.

Trigger For Change

MMG sought to implement a Standard Operating Environment (SOE) of Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 2010 as the platform into which future new technologies could be introduced. Like every organisation, the existing skills of employees using Microsoft applications varied greatly, and key to this initiative was minimising the productivity dip that can occur with SOE upgrades by providing employees with an understanding of how to apply their existing knowledge and skills to applications in the new SOE.

Windows 7 and Office 2010 Learning Program

MMG selected MCI through an Request for Proposal, or RFP, process to participate in the implementation project and to devise and deliver in-person learning sessions that would introduce the organisation’s employees to Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 2010 applications. MCI’s training team were effectively the face of this initiative at MMG’s sites, and as a result a strong partnership and high-level understanding of the business environment were essential.

The learning program comprised:

  • End-User Awareness Sessions for small and large groups attended by over 430 people. The sessions provided knowledge to comfortably navigate and work in Windows 7, Outlook, Word and Excel 2010, and introduced Microsoft Lync for future implementation and use
  • Expert User Applications Training attended by 250 people. These 1.5-3 hour sessions addressed the key features and common functions in Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook 2010
  • Roving Training provided users with one-on-one instruction in using Office 2010 on an opt-in basis, and increasing the relevance and retention of learning by using live files
  • Train-the-Trainer for the local MMG trainer in Laos, including providing IP for translation into Lao.

The program schedule was adjusted for each site’s requirements and preferences, but generally structured training sessions were conducted at set times during the shift, with Roving Training taking place around them.

Impact: Future-Ready Technology and Competent, Satisfied Employees

Employee feedback was positive, with the learning program scoring a satisfaction rating average of 92%. From the project team’s perspective, MMG and MCI now enjoy an ongoing partnership and an open willingness to share ideas, advice and the occasional laugh as we improve knowledge and productivity together.
